There is no question that this school year will be incredibly challenging, likely one of the most challenging we have ever faced, but I am encouraged by the fact that we will be facing this challenge together. Task force committees made up of board members, administrators, staff, and parents have invested a great deal of time and energy to develop our reopening plan. The health and safety of our students and staff has been our top priority in developing this plan. We have worked to balance health and safety with the academic and emotional needs of our students. The parents, students, and staff of Barren County Schools have always demonstrated a spirit of collaboration and support, and I am confident that we will continue to support one another as we navigate these uncharted waters. We are BC!
-Bo Matthews, Superintendent of Barren County Schools
Based on guidance from Kentucky Department of Education, in partnership with local, state and national health officials, Barren County Board of Education's Re-opening Task Force, along with sub-committees Health and Safety, Quality Instruction, Supporting Exceptional Learners, and District Operations, has developed a tiered approach to be followed during the 2020-2021 school year. We are attempting to plan for all contingencies while remaining flexible as new information becomes available.
The following sub committees have developed plans to reopen schools this fall. Please read through the individual plans and submit your questions using the link provided at the bottom of the page. Thank you for your time and input...
Based on recommendations from the 2020-21 calendar committee, the Barren County Board of Education approved the Alternative Calendar #3 for the 2020-21 school year. The first day for K-12 students will be Aug 24th, and preschool begins Sept 8th. The calendar maintains traditional holiday and fall/spring breaks.
The Quality Teaching & Learning Subcommittee has worked to develop the following resources to help describe how instruction will be conducted in order to meet the guidelines of Healthy at School:
Purpose: To consider how changes in schedules and instructional modes may impact services for exceptional students (ECE, EL, GT).

Purpose: To consider how changes in meal service, transportation and after-school activities.
Meals: Hot meal options will be served with limited options compared to previous years. However, with the use of heat sealed trays, our Nutrition Services staff will make meals and package them for delivery to the classroom. A draft menu has been made, but changes may occur based on food availability. When school closes due to COVID-19, meal service options will be available similar to the summer feeding program. Principals will work with classes to rotate meal locations to include outdoor seating and social time.
Transportation: Students in grades 1 - 12 who ride the bus will wear masks (unless medically exempted), complete temperature checks upon boarding the bus or submit a health affidavit. Students will also be assigned to seats to help with contact tracing, and we will group family members together when possible. Other CDC guidelines will be followed to ensure student and staff safety.
Afterschool Activities: Following guidelines, 21st Century Programs and Barren Beyond the Bell Bridge Afterschool program will operate under childcare regulations for CDC. Masks, social distancing and sanitation practices are based on childcare guidelines. Athletic programs will follow KHSAA guidelines and extracurricular programs will follow afterschool guidance.
