Why teach Digital Citizenship?
The Barren County School District has it’s core vision for student and staff to “Become Life Ready”, and therefore strongly believes that all students should be prepared to be good citizens in digital environments as well as in the physical world. Through coordinated lessons, students will receive instruction on the safe and proper way to use technology. The digital citizenship topics including internet safety, privacy & security, relationships & communication, cyberbullying, digital footprint & reputation, self-image & identity, information literacy, and creative credit & copyright.
In accordance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires schools to educate students about appropriate online behavior. This includes education on interacting with other individuals on social networking websites and in chat rooms and on cyberbullying awareness and response.
Is there a required timeframe for completing the digital citizenship lessons?
Teachers at grades K-6 may choose when to complete the digital citizenship lessons. All lessons should be completed before the end of the school year.
Must teachers complete the digital citizenship lessons exactly as they are written?
Teachers may adapt and modify the lesson so that it meets their students’ needs. Please be sure that the students master the digital citizenship lesson’s stated objectives.
