Dear Bard Students, Welcome to our Summer Internship page. Here you will find all the information, position postings and necessary forms you will need to consider and apply for a summer internship. If hired, you will also find payroll, journal entry and final project requirements here. As you move along in the process please let us know what else you need in regard to professional development resources and support.
What is an internship? At Bard Holyoke an internship is an integral part of your education. It will give you an opportunity to;
INTEGRATE theories learned through your course work with the vision and practices of the professional world.
PRACTICE critical and creative thinking to help solve problems as you work toward your project goals.
BUILD practical and relational skills as you connect with others and begin to create a professional network
For the summer 2020 internship cycle; June 1- August 14, 2020 we have attempted to set Bard Sponsored Internships to be Virtual Internships as much as possible. Due to transportation, family schedule challenges and health risks brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic almost all work will be done remotely and include both Project Based and Administrative tasks. Please be sure to review job descriptions carefully as they may include; occasional requests to go on site, specific scheduling, tech requirements, etc.
All Interns are required to:
Complete 60 hrs of service over a five week period. Must finish by August 14, 2020
Arrange your work schedule with your site supervisor
Submit all required payroll paperwork before your start date
Submit fully completed and approved Weekly Time-sheets
Complete any necessary additional paperwork and training required by your site supervisor
Complete all project assignments to the satisfaction of and in collaboration with your site supervisor
Attend weekly or bi-weekly check in meetings with your site supervisor
Attend two Bard meetings; one before you start/one mid-way through
Keep a journal of your experience as you go
Submit a final internship report outlining
1. your daily/weekly goals and work assignments completed
2. its impact on you and the organization you partnered with
3. descriptions and examples of deliverable
4. additional writing reflections may be given via a prompt from Bard or Partner Supervisor

We expect the internships to be competitive and funding is limited; we cannot guarantee a position to everyone. Priority will go to Bard Holyoke students who have not had an internship yet. The Bard summer internship offers up to $900 ($15 per hr) for 60 hours of work. Before committing to a position please make sure you are willing and able to make a full commitment to the opportunity. Time worked Includes all project based and administrative tasks, research time, meetings and communications, assigned by your supervisor. As well as, weekly journal writing and time to complete your final project report. Students will be paid for hours worked bi-weekly not to exceed 60 hours. It is your responsibility to track your hours and discuss them with your supervisor so that projects can be adjusted accordingly. Please be sure to keep your journal writing and final project reporting time in mind when you are estimating how much time you have remaining. Your final report must be submitted with your last time-sheet.
If your site supervisor asks you to continue to work beyond the 60 hours please inform them that you cannot work as a Bard Intern past that time.
If you are being asked to stay on - Congratulations!! - This means you’ve done a great job and your supervisor sees you as an asset. OPEN: Digital Collections and Exhibit Design ORGANIZATION: HOLYOKE PUBLIC LIBRARY-HOLYOKE HISTORY ROOM
PROJECT: The Holyoke Street School Collection Internship - Site Supervisor: Eileen Crosby, History Archivist
The Holyoke History Room of the Holyoke Public Library maintains a rich collection of materials documenting the history of Holyoke from its founding in 1850 to the present day. The Covid-19 pandemic has created an urgent need for libraries to offer more content remotely. This internship is designed to give a student experience processing digital collections owned by the Holyoke History Room and preparing them for use by the public. The work of the intern will help the History Room achieve its goal of putting more content online. The internship will also involve using digitized images and text from a variety of collections to create an online exhibit or walking tour.
Collaborating with the Archivist, the intern will use shared platforms such as Google Drive and Google Sheets, as well as cloud-based programs, to complete these projects. The intern will gain experience with translation, writing photographic metadata (descriptions), transcribing and time-coding historic video footage and oral histories, and using web-based software to design an online exhibit or walking tour.
Requirements: Ability to work both collaboratively and independently; ability to follow directions closely; high comfort level with translating brief sentences and phrases from English into good, idiomatic Spanish without the use of automatic translation tools. This position also requires a high comfort level with online tools and computer software, including Zoom, Google Drive, Google Sheets (for data entry only), resizing and cropping digital images. Some work will require access to a laptop or desktop computer. No prior knowledge of Holyoke history is needed, but an interest in history and good writing skills are a plus.

FILLED: Digital Storytelling, Travel Research, Writing, Editing & Social Media ORGANIZATION: LEADERS OF THE FREE WORLD
PROJECT: First-Time Travel Stories Series Internship - Site Supervisor: Ruby Maddox, Co-Founder
The Intern will assist the LFW team in revitalizing their First-Time Travel Stories Series, an online travel blog that highlights the first-time travel experiences of Black men. We believe the impact of these experiences are transformational and that these stories are powerful. We want to encourage and inspire more young men of color to travel and to share their stories. Interns will research sites like LinkedIN for organizations and individuals connected to travel aboard and reach out to solicit and secure interested “storytellers”. Then review, edit and prepare the stories for blog posting. You will create a document with the completed and ready to release stories and post to the LFW website in collaboration with the LFW communications team. These stories will help engage new and existing audiences and stakeholders. It is an opportunity to learn about and impact every aspect of the organization by reinforcing the LFW mission and supporting our social media presence, outreach and development goals.
Requirements: Intern will be comfortable doing online research and soliciting stories from prospective story contributors. Must have social media experience as well as excellent writing and editing skills. Looking for someone who is self-motivated and responsive.
Preferred Qualifications: Interest or knowledge of the Black Male Achievement field or international education/experience is a plus as is any previous experience working/volunteering with a nonprofit.

OPEN: Research and Visual Content Creation ORGANIZATION: HUMAN IN COMMON
About us: Human In Common is a small, woman-owned business dedicated to teaching skills for dismantling racism, interrupting sexual harassment and violence, and creating workplaces and communities rooted in diversity, equity and inclusion. We facilitate trainings to schools, non-profits, municipalities and businesses. As a three-year old company, we are rapidly expanding and still building the plane as we are flying it! We are seeking interns to assist with various projects related to our growth and services. This is an excellent opportunity to apply and develop your areas of interest and expertise to a company that is dedicated to social change. People of Color strongly encouraged to apply.
FILLED: Position 1: Research and design: Project description: 1. Research and create posters to add to our History of Racism in the US Timeline, a gallery of posters, also viewable in digital format, that is part of our Interrupting Racism training. We will provide the template of our posters and topics to be researched and added. 2. Research data on the material impact of racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination. Create presentation slides that include graphs, charts and images and citations of all sources. We will provide you with a template to use for creating new slides. This is a great opportunity for anyone who loves research and is passionate about developing social justice educational material. All work will be conducted remotely.
Requirements: Ability to work independently and collaboratively; ability to follow detailed directions; excellent research skills; ability to determine legitimate on-line sources; ability to identify images that are public domain; ability to provide accurate citation of all sources; access to a computer and internet; accurate grammar and strong writing skills; experience creating slide presentations with graphs, charts and other features to present data. Availability to meet remotely twice a week with supervisor to discuss work, communicate questions and receive directions, and to demonstrate progress.
Preferred qualifications:
Solid comprehension of systemic racism and other forms of oppression
Experience with historical research
Strong visual layout/artistic skill
Expertise in creating presentations that are visually appealing and capture data
Strong communication skills
Access to a computer and internet
OPEN: Position 2: Website and Social Media: Project description: Update and expand our website and social media (Facebook and more) to add content including photos, videos, registration pages, blogs, course material; create password protected web material to allow different levels of information access to different clients; create flyers and posters of upcoming trainings and events using our logo and colors. All work will be conducted remotely.
Requirements: Ability to work independently and collaboratively; ability to follow detailed instructions; experience and expertise with website design and development. We currently use Squarespace and we are not sure if this platform allows for the type of expansion we are seeking. If Squarespace is not the best option, conduct research to identify a more suitable platform; assist in the transition of content to the new platform; create a training manual of all passwords and procedures for maintaining the website upon completion of your internship. This is an ideal opportunity for anyone who would like to express their tech savvy and creativity working on social justice projects. Must have access to a computer and internet.
Preferred qualifications:
Experience and expertise developing websites
Ability to create a website that meets section 508 standards for accessibility
Strong visual layout/artistic skills; Ability to create a professional looking, creative layout using Human In Common’s logo, colors and design style
Knowledge and expertise creating content on various forms of social media
OPEN: Position 3: Administrative Systems Development: Project Description: Set up Freshbooks software to manage all business records.
Requirements: Under the direction of our Administrative Coordinator, create client records including proposals, contracts, meeting notes, accounts receivable; create personnel files for all staff; create accounts payable records; create a library of proposals, contract templates and other company forms. All work will be conducted remotely. This is an ideal opportunity for anyone interested in business administration, bookkeeping, project management, financial management or related fields.

Experience setting up office systems
Experience using administrative management programs
