In the Leveled Book, Let's Go Team, students are introduced to the concept of teamwork and working together as a team through the study of the Summer and Special Olympics. Students are also introduced to some of the sports and athletes students may see at the Olympics. After reading this book, we will encourage students to discuss what it means to work together and how they work as a team in the classroom. Then, in Lessons 2, 3 and 13 students will read, write and answer questions about sports and teams. In Lesson 28, students will explore how different sports balls move. In Lesson 29, students will learn the history of the Special Olympics by reading and completing a timeline. This unit's Easy Read Book, We Can Work Together, extends the concept of teamwork and how athletes do their best when competing in sports. Students follow Alana and her teammates as they get ready for the Special Olympics. After reading this book, we will have students talk about how the team works together to help Alana to do her best. Then, in Lesson 5, the unit's first article, Teamwork, students learn more about various types of teamwork. In Lesson 21, students will work together to follow the steps of a recipe to make Olympic Pretzel Rings. Throughout the unit, students will discuss and make connections with teamwork and what it means to work together. Throughout the unit, students learn about teamwork, working as a team and doing their best. In Lesson 27, students will compete in teams during an Olympic Events Day. As students participate in these and other activities, encourage them to cheer for and support their team and teammates. Finally, in the unit's second article, Goal Planning, students learn how to plan for their own goal. We will be encouraging students to make connections with their experiences of working with others to complete a goal.
