All players going out for Baraboo High School baseball will have their skills evaluated by the coaching staff during the first week of the season. This will guide the coaches in making initial roster placement decisions for the season.
Players may be evaluated in the areas listed below (or more depending upon time and necessity).
Speed
Home to First Base
40 yard dash
Arm Strength
Radar gun used to collect speed of throws across INF, from OF, off the mound, etc.
Arm Accuracy
Accuracy of throws from the position (i.e. Infielder throwing to 1B, Outfielder throwing to bases)
"Trueness" of throws (i.e. ball not significantly tailing or running, but rather carrying straight to target)
Actions
Efficient, consistent and repeatable footwork and glove work at the specific position.
Pop Time (Catchers only)
Measured from time ball touches catcher's glove to the time the ball reaches second base.
Exit Velocity (Hitting)
Hitting power measured by radar gun to find batted ball's velocity leaving the bat.
Hitting Contact
Ability of the hitter to make solid contact with pitches in different parts of the strike zone
Bunting
Ability of the hitter to directionally bunt a pitched baseball in different parts of the strike zone
Pitching
Velocity, accuracy and movement of fastball and off-speed pitches (changeup, breaking ball, etc.)
Baseball "IQ"
Knowledge of the rules, strategies, techniques, etiquette, etc. of the game of baseball.
Initial rosters will be created after the BHS coaching staff feels confident with the amount of data and observations we have collected during the first week of practice.
Rosters may be in constant fluctuation throughout the season based upon the needs of the program.
For initial rosters, when a player is "border line" between two levels of teams, coaches will often place the player on the lower level team to begin the season and move the player up to the higher level if their performance warrants it.
