Advanced Placement (AP) Information
Advanced Placement (AP) Information
Advanced Placement (AP) is a program created by the Collegeboard system for students to have an opportuntity to take college level courses during high school. The courses are of college-level rigor, and have an all-encompassing exam during the month of May. If students pass this exam, they have the opportuntity to earn college credit.
AP courses expect students to be independent, responsible, and aware of the standards Collegeboard has set for each course it provides. RIHS offers multiple AP Courses which can be viewed in our Course Catalog.
To maintain balance between taking AP classes and College Early Start (CES) courses, students should consider the following guidelines:
10th grade - No more than a combination of three AP classes AND two CES courses per semester.
11th grade - No more than a combination of four AP classes AND three CES courses per semester.
12th grade - No more than a combination of four AP classes AND three CES courses per semester.
When taking an Advanced Placement course, students are expected to understand the following:
The class will be taught at a college-level
The rigor of the coursework will be more challenging than a non-AP course
Instruction will be more challenging and may include some self-study
Students can expect an estimated 45 minutes to 2 hours of homework per night per class, or roughly 3-7 hours per week per class.
Students are expected to be proactive and utilize multiple resources, including AP classroom, to complete coursework and prepare for assessments
NOTE: As an understanding of these guidelines and expectations, students are required to sign an AP Contract which binds them to the recommendations and expectations explained here.
