Sputnik 1 impacted the Soviet Union by making it look like a well developed country and it showed their technological power. “The most significant and enduring result, for world public opinion, of the launching of the first earth satellite by the USSR was a revolutionary revision of estimates of Soviet power and standing”(Launius). Soviet Union. The USSR was a communist state which is where the Sputnik was launched from. The first satellite was revolutionary because it was the first ever satilite to go into earth's orbit and it was the biggest thing to happen that revoled around space.
The successful launch of Sputnik had a huge impact, and made Soviet followers happy.
“The launch of Sputnik 1 had a large impact on the Soviet Union and its people. It was a joyous occasion for supporters of the Soviet Union and an equally frightening one for those in the United States” (Caminiti).
This evidence talks about how after the successful launch of Sputnik Soviet followers were ecstatic, and this also put the Soviets very ahead in technological aspects. They didn't just stop at Sputnik and wait for a response, they followed it up by launching two lighter and faster satellites, one carrying a dog into space. The successful launch struck fear into many Americans this gave the Soviets the leverage they wanted.
