Before the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum opened, mentally ill people were treated horribly and thrown into the streets by their own families. The people in charge of the mental asylums didn’t care about the well being of the patients. Eventually, a whole lot more laws were put in place to protect mental hospital patients.
