Prior to the mental health reform movement in the U.S.A during the 1850s, those in mental health facilities faced cruel treatment and abuse. Advocates such as Dorothea Dix believed that the treatment of these people should be improved and reformed. Thanks to this movement and many more that took place after, the conditions and society's views on mental healthcare have improved significantly in the 21st century, but are still not perfect.
