Bandera ISD SEL

What is Social and Emotional Learning?

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. CASEL (The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) defines SEL as having five Core Competencies. These competencies are: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. The implementation of SEL activities increases students' ability to integrate feeling, thinking, and behavior to positively impact academic success and emotional well-being.

Our Vision for SEL

Our Vision for SEL in Bandera ISD is to cultivate emotional well-being and student academic growth. We believe that in taking time to intentionally concentrate on mental health by developing meaningful relationships, practicing culturally responsive classroom-management, and focusing on Social and Emotional Learning Competencies with a Growth Mindset, students will benefit socially, emotionally and academically.
