We gather to resist, to commune, and to celebrate the voices, rhythms, and insights that provide reflection, vision, and catharsis when there is so much pain, anger, and fear. Poets have long guided us, grounded us, and helped to articulate what our bodies know and feel. The drum has long been an anchor, a communication device, and a way to unlock energy, emotion, and devotion. Poets and drums, emcees, and a DJ, united in a spirit of resilience, remembrance, and in call and response. We gather to affirm a commitment to our shared humanity, to resist white supremacy, anti-queerness, misogyny, and the brutal othering of our immigrant communities. We gather in celebration of our multilingual world and the layering of the voices that need to be heard right now!
With gratitude,
Baba Israel

On the 10th anniversary of Word. Sound. Power., and the 20th anniversary of its predecessor, BAM Poetry Presents, this year's event is a dedication to speaking truth to, with, and against power. Embracing the lineage of conscious emcees, lyricists, and music makers, Word. Sound. Power. 2025—
Power to the Poets brings to the stage radical and revolutionary minded voices unafraid and unapologetic in their assertions of personhood, freedom, and love. For the past two years, we’ve acknowledged the storyteller and griots of the culture, celebrated its rhythms. Now, to complete the three-year arc, we unleash the fire in the tongues of emcees who represent their community, their people, and justice itself.
