The culture of Hip-Hop for me and many others around the world is sacred, and one of the ways we see and move through the world. When Biggie exclaimed “Whoever thought that Hip-Hop would take it this far”, even he couldn’t have imagined how much further it would go. In its 50th year, we want to send the first of three love-letters for the culture. “Word”, “Sound”, and “Power” will be the arc of the next three years, culminating in our own twenty-year celebration of BAM representing the culture through this unique and amazing show: first as BAM Poetry Presents in its first decade, and evolving to Word. Sound. Power. in its second. Over the next three years, the music and rhythm—via our sound-providing DJ’s and beatboxers (SOUND) and the political spirit of Hip Hop (POWER)—will be highlighted as well. For this year however, we will begin with the WORD.
“The New Storytellers” (WORD) is a celebration of Hip Hop’s orators, the emcee. We hold our emcees in the same tradition as the West African griot, the keepers of history, knowledge, and truth. The master of our ceremonies is the physical voice to articulate, project, promote and ignite the jam, the crowd and community to action, to rejoice and to celebrate. Our ensemble of poets and emcees were specially selected to invoke the awe-inspiring energy that only language, rhythm and poetry can. Ase.
Sincerely,
Mikal Amin Lee

The New Storytellers is a theme that speaks close to my heart as an artist. The power of our stories illuminates, connects, and deepens our common understanding of our humanity and also the specific experiences of our artists this year. Within this year's show are artists who sculpt cinematic verses that drop us right into their journeys and demand and beckon our focus. The work of Silent Knight, Pri The HoneyDark, Helixx Armageddon, and Dahlak Brathwaite balance personal story with a larger cultural and historical context. Simon Clevland returns to light our journey, with new set designer Benjamin Jones who has created an environment that honors a New York feel. Our show takes place during the celebration of 50 years of Hip Hop with DJ Reborn providing the bedrock for our artists, with words brought to life by dancers Chakra, Twice Light, and Bboy Spidey who embody a diverse range of Hip Hop styles. Choreographer Jade Charon returns as a wonderful collaborator who understands the power of movement to invoke emotion, character, and story. Instrumentalist Robotron, returns to add live instrumentation to our score. We are excited to welcome young performers back to Word Sound Power. I am grateful to Mikal Amin for his collaboration and vision and for all the commitment from BAM’s production and Creative Social Impact team.
Sincerely,
Baba Israel
