Own Your Part: Real Estate 101 with Tonette Campbell
We will dive into the importance of financial literacy and its role in wealth building, by exploring various strategies and tools that can empower individuals to make informed financial decisions and achieve long-term financial stability. Additionally, we will shed light on the significant advantages of homeownership such as wealth accumulation, tax benefits, increased financial security and more.
Tonette Campbell: As a Native Baltimorean with over seventeen years of experience as a special educator in Baltimore City Public Schools, I value the importance of all of our communities. I strive to make the home buying and selling process equitable for all community stakeholders. My teaching philosophy is “ALL students can learn.” My real estate philosophy is that ALL people can purchase a home. My focus as an agent is on collective wealth building and social justice. I obtained my real estate license so that I could create enough capital to begin responsibly developing overlooked areas in my city (commonly referred to as the “Black Butterfly”). I have three children–a City College graduate, a current Dunbar student, and a current Roland Park student. So, when I’m not working with my real estate clients, I’m reading or spending time with family and friends at any one of the hundreds of venues that Baltimore has to offer.
William B. Holmes III: I've spent over 15 years of my career in human services in multiple roles in and around Baltimore. I've worked to empower different populations through workforce development, education, health and wellness, and life skills. My working knowledge of the mortgage industry along with my drive to serve together have charged me with a passion to educate and empower through home ownership and financial freedom.

Debt Clinic - Student Loan with Nicole Hochsprung
The student debt clinic curriculum makes clear that the individual struggles of our members are the result of political failures, failures that add to already existing inequalities in our society. Student debt clinics are a first step in breaking out of the isolation that debt imposes, so that we can find collective solutions to the student debt crisis. Student debt clinics provide our members with important information on two free federal debt relief programs:
Income-driven repayment plans, which are available to every federal student loan borrower, regardless of where they work. Income-driven repayment plans determine your monthly payment based on your adjusted gross income and family size and may save you money.
Public Service Loan Forgiveness, which allows qualifying federal student loan borrowers to have the money they saved using an income-driven repayment plan forgiven after making payments for 10 years while working in public service.
Student debt clinics provide members with information on how these programs work, the steps necessary to take to qualify for them, resources to support them through the process, and best practices to make sure that they are maximizing the benefits available to them.
Nicole Hochsprung is the Assistant Director in the Higher Education Department at the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) where she leads federal higher education policy, including college access, affordability, fighting for-profit fraud, and distance education, by engaging continuously with AFT’s members to craft policy that is truly relevant to the work of educators. Nicole has traveled to universities, community colleges, and schools across the country to meet face to face with labor leaders, faculty, and students to contribute to policy discussions, organizing drives, and political campaigns.
