What is VET?
VET stands for Vocational Education and Training in Schools.
VET programs include:
the theoretical background required for work in the industry
practical, hands on experience gained through work placement
skills development
a chance to improve your understanding of the related industry
Who can do VET?
Students entering Year 10 are able to apply for VET programs.
However, preference will be given to suitable Year 11 applicants. This is due to most programs being undertaken over a two year period.
Why choose a VET subject?
It allows you to train in the industry you choose, and gain the skills and experience directly related to getting a job.
On successful completion, you may gain two qualifications instead of one – a nationally recognised Vocational and Education Certificate, and a VCE or VCAL Certificate.
Where are VET courses held?
VET courses are currently held at Ballarat High School, FedUni TAFE, Brace Education and Training, Australian Catholic University, Mt Clear College, Loreto College and other venues yet to be confirmed.
Students travel to the course of their choice at their own expense.
Do I get to go out and work?
Some courses require students to complete Structured Workplace Learning as part of the training. Structured Workplace Learning provides you with the opportunity to put your skills and knowledge into practice.
How much does it cost?
VET programs are fee paying programs and students will be expected to contribute to the cost of these programs.
How long does it take to complete a VET course?
VET programs are organised in a four unit structure similar to VCE subjects.
Most VET programs are two year courses, however, programs will only continue to be offered by the school if there are sufficient numbers of students and the cost of delivering the program is at a level acceptable to both parents and the school.
How do I apply to do a VET subject?
Attend the BHS Parent Information Evening
Ask about materials, fees, uniforms, texts, times, transport and work placement.
Discuss your choice with your parents, your friends, your learning mentor and your teachers.
Complete the Expression of Interest form and the online application
Attend the interview arranged by the Ballarat VET Cluster.
If successful, you will be awarded a place in the course and be informed in writing.
You will be required to pay the balance of your VET fees in 2022, after paying a deposit of $70.00.
