Every year in March, basketball teams from around the country come together to form a large tournament. This tournament is known as March Madness. Tons of people come together to watch their favorite basketball teams face off with each other for a chance to win.
This year, the tournament does look different, due to Covid-19, but many things still stay the same. People still tune in to watch the highs and lows of each game. Some teams go far, and others end their season very quickly. Many people thought Ohio State would go far, but that is not the case. Luke Enderle thought this was surprising.
“No ones ever heard of oral roberts and then they come out and beat Ohio State who was a number 2 seed. They then went on to win in round 2,” Enderle said.
Oral Roberts is a relatively unheard college that beat Ohio State in the very first round. This was a huge upset, and every day Oral Roberts is making history. Andrew Enginger was very shocked at their success.
“Second 15 seed EVER to reach Sweet 16,” Enginger said.
Oral Roberts is not the only team that is surprising many other teams. Illinois, who was ranked the highest in the tournament, was knocked out by 8 seed Loyola Chicago. Many people, like Isabella Pate, had Illinois go far.
“I had them going to the championship,” Pate said.
Another team that knocked out a high seed early was North Texas. North Texas, a 13 seed, played Purdue, a 4 seed, and beat them in the first round. Paige Butler found this interesting.
“Purdue was playing well in the beginning and had the lead most of the game. North Texas made a comeback towards the end that tied the game. They went into overtime and North Texas beat Purdue. This was a huge upset because North Texas has never won an NCAA tournament game in school history until this year,” Butler said.
With all of the surprising upsets, March Madness is sure to be fun to watch as we get closer to a champion.
