Despite all the problems COVID-19 has brought to Badin, Nerf Wars is still on. With $800 on the line, teams are competing as hard as ever to win the crown.
Nerf Wars is an annual tradition with teams of six and a goal to eliminate the other team. It is tournament style and whoever has the most team members left standing move on to the next week. So far, two weeks of competition has passed and there are a few participants that stand out.
“First, I hit Diego because he tried to make a move on us but got distracted looking for my teammate Ben, so I popped out and eliminated him. Then, on Saturday night we trapped Corbin in his car. Eventually, his mom came out and unlocked the doors and I opened it and got him," Noah Tincher said.
Tincher is a senior at Badin that recorded two eliminations this week, leading his team to a 5-4 win. The second elimination occurred late Saturday night, just before the midnight cutoff time. While Noah’s team moved on to the next round, one competitor's team couldn't quite make it past the second round.
“It started last week with three easy eliminations of Grace, Tracy and Caroline. But then this week we had to play a much tougher team and I knew I had to put the team on my back. On Thursday, we were losing so the other team was much less cautious. Eventually, Bailey got out of his car and I was able to hit him with a football. I did get the elimination but we ended up losing but we’ll be back in the spring," Ian Sabourin said.
Sabourin is a junior at Badin who leads the tournament in eliminations with four. However, his team was taken out in the second round by a score of 4-3.
32 teams started, but only eight remain. These two competitors and many others have helped their teams get eliminations and move on. Now, with only eight teams left, the best is yet to come!
