Badin Cheerleading has always been a very big thing for the school, and with COVID-19 there have been many upsetting changes that have occurred. The cheer coaches have also had to change many things and I am here to tell you about it.
There are many exciting things that go on for Badin cheer, for example, being able to cheer at all games, both JV and freshman being able to cheer at Homecoming and Senior Night games, and some other organizations that go on, but cannot this year because of COVID-19.
“I know that this was disappointing for the girls, because they always look forward to participating in these traditions,” Coach Katie Maus said.
Missing out on all these traditions hasn't been the only change for the cheerleaders and their coaches. Things had to change even before the first day of practice, as tryouts were held virtually.
“We had to teach material, review material, and hold tryouts virtually this year because of COVID," Maus said.
Cheer Camp is another very important event for the cheerleaders to learn the dances and cheers used throughout the season. Additionally, it creates team bonding experiences and brings everybody closer together.
“Missing Cheer Camp this year was very upsetting to us coaches and our girls. They still had to learn the material, but us coaches had to incorporate this within our practices and free time which didn't come with any of the fun events," Maus said.
Despite all of the hard work put in from the coaches and cheerleaders, they never knew from one week to the next if COVID would take away their games.
"Us coaches had to be in constant contact with the girl, because we never knew if games would happen or be canceled," Maus said.
