On the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 9, students received one of the best emails that Mr. Pendergest can send. Snow day! It doesn’t get much better than waking up with no school and seeing a beautiful blanket of untouched snow on the ground.
Not only was the snow day appreciated by all, but especially in the fact that it was a good old-fashioned one. With remote learning in a pandemic world, snow days with no school seemed like a thing of the past.
“This snow day was more rewarding because I was so sure we were going to get an online day,” freshman Samantha Keil said.
While many other public schools in the area still had to work remotely, Badin students were able to hit snooze and enjoy the day off. Many students seemed relieved to have this one feeling of normalcy in an otherwise abnormal year.
“I would have been so furious that I would have to cool down in the snow from 7:44-2:30,” junior Jonathan Polido said.
The pandemic has caused many things to change in our lives, and still being able to have a traditional snow day was reassuring to many.
“I would have been upset [if we were remote] because if it was without COVID, we wouldn't have had an online day so I don't think that should change,” junior Emma Giuliano said.
After most students woke up from sleeping in, a day of fun winter activities lay ahead. Whether it was sledding, watching TV, reading, playing out in the snow or hanging out with friends, the day was not wasted.
“At approximately 5 in the morning, we were notified that we had a snow day. I did what any other good child would do. I got up, threw on my bright teal comfy, put warm socks on with some boots, and proceeded to shovel the driveway before my parents had to leave for work. I finished the driveway by 6:18 a.m. just in time for them. My younger sister joined me and made waffles for the morning,” senior Jayla Starks said.
While some people faced the day with gusto, others used it simply to unwind and relax.
“I did absolutely nothing, basically sleeping in and then binging the Marvel franchise because I'm a huge geek,” junior Jillian Palomino said.
This snow day had a different feeling for some, as if it was a glimpse of what life was like before COVID-19.
“It felt different in the sense that we knew we could have had to do remote. Luckily though we didn't have to and we got to do as we pleased,” Starks said.
Like the days before COVID-19, this was a day to remind many of the nostalgic feeling as a child and waking up to a snow day.
“It felt like the good old days of receiving that text and falling back asleep,” senior Andrew Larkin said.
Regardless of how students spent this day, everyone can agree that it was well needed and well enjoyed. It allowed us to step back and remember how things can be without the coronavirus looming over our heads, during the “good old days”.
