Since last school year, Badin has begun a system of randomized drug tests for students at the school. Every student is tested at least once a year, but it can be more.
The drug tests have created controversy because the majority of students, and many of their parents are not in support of drug tests at school.
Many students believe that drug use outside of school is their choice, and that Badin cannot be involved with it.
“I feel that since students should be allowed to do what they want as long as it is not on a school campus,” one Badin student explained.
Other students think that the drug tests are an invasion of privacy, and are against testing.
“It is an invasion of our privacy and Badin should not get involved with it,” another student stated.
Many parents at Badin also are against the drug testing because they think it is not necessary.
“My parents are worried that since many students won't be given the opportunity to ‘live up’ high school, it means they will act up more and try worse things once they're in college,” one student said.
The majority of students believe that the drug testing has a negative impact on students due to many reasons.
“I don't think that the drug tests have done anything besides cause more anxiety and worries onto students’ days.
Many students I have spoken to have told me that they aren’t worried about failing a drug test, they are just uncomfortable being forced to take the test,” one student explained.
Other students believe that the drug tests have mentally impacted students in a negative way.
“I think a majority of the students at Badin would agree that the drug tests impose a huge amount of unnecessary stress among the students and negatively impacts the morale of the students,” another student said.
Overall, the majority of Badin students are not supportive of the drug tests for a majority of reasons, including mental health and privacy.
