Quick rundown on how we get two “Justice League” films and the difference between them so we all have context for this article. The “Justice League'' that was released in theaters back in 2017 was made out of cut footage and reshoots by Joss Wedon who took over for Zach Snyder due to a family emergency and couldn’t continue working on the film.
Wedon’s cut was what the world saw four years ago but before that film ever came out there was a full four hour uncut film made by Snyder and would somehow get cut down even further to be shown in theaters. Due to DC executives wanting to stick with the date in mind to release the film, hired Wedon to finish it and it was shown to the world… and automatically hated.
The film tanked so bad that people were campaigning and setting up petitions to have the Snyder cut released, fully. All four hours to be shown to the public and low and behold, the world is getting their wish. Zach Snyder’s “Justice League'' will be released next month on March 18th as an R rated film on HBOMax. Or a four episode miniseries of the four hour film just broken down, look that one is still up for debate.
Bits and pieces from the film had been released building up to the trailer dropping and more has been shown since then. Even new shots have been filmed over the years up until the trailer was released to the public on February 14th.
New Rockstars Erik Voss broke down the trailer and since this article will be a quick summary of what the Snyder cut has done and how to live up to the expectations put upon it, the trailer won’t be the main topic. If you did want to see how Voss broke down the trailer in depth, then click here.
Now with the summary of four years of drama around this film, it’s time to get into the trailer and talk on what’s about to come.
Many people had learned about certain characters being introduced in the film and different scenes that had been released to the public over the years but that didn’t mean the trailer had no high moments and conspiracy theorists to spend days pawing over.
There was confirmation about Darkseid, the big bad of the DCU, the Thanos of the DCU. He’s a genocidal maniac who wants to merge the mother boxes, or godlike computer cubes.
Along with him, two of his Generals, Desaad and Granny Goodness, are new characters to appear and are forces to be reckoned with as they help Darkseid take over the world and merge those mother boxes.
The film will also show more of Ezra Miller’s Flash and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg and how their powers work. It is also speculated that Miller’s “Flash'' film will be related to “Justice League” as well. We’ll also be able to see just how Cyborg’s robotic parts work with him and his life before the accident that turned him into the half man - half robot that he is now.
There’s more focus on that dreary, dead, apocalyptic landscape Batman ‘dreamed’ of in “Batman v. Superman''. He is in there with Darkseid and his minions. Alongside him is Cyborg and Jared Leto’s Joker who finally gets to be on screen with Affleck’s Batman, something Snyder had planned on happening at some point in his DC films.
Stephenwolf this time looks more like an alien and has an actual motive besides joining the mother boxes together this time. He’s trying to be a part of Darkseid’s army again, or it’s speculated that he wants to be with the army again.
The film is going to have more added to it since it’s a four hour version compared to the original. I hope “Avengers: Endgame” has prepped everyone enough to sit through four hours of film, good news is that you can pause when you need to!
The Snyder cut seems to be something very different to the theatrical cut Wedon made and with the avid fans backing this film since the beginning this will surely be a love letter to all of them. I know I’ll be watching it from the comfort of my basement. Let’s see if the Snyder cut lives up to all of it’s grand expectations.
