While service this year may look a little bit different, the senior service projects remain unchanged. For their senior year, students must associate a project with a specific agency for service.
The service coordinator, Mrs. Halverson, has planned out the service program so that you pick an agency to do service with in your Junior year, and then do a project with that same agency your senior year.
“I’m very excited for the projects despite the many restrictions that the students are facing," Mrs. Halverson said.
These projects can involve many different types of service. For Noah Tincher’s group, it is teaching classes about homelessness.
“We will be teaching the freshman religion class. We’re just trying to teach them and spread awareness of what they can do and how to help with the problem of homelessness,” Tincher said.
However, for some groups their project has been severely altered due to COVID-19. One of these groups is Kaitlyn Covey’s, who is doing their project with Westover retirement home. Unfortunately for them, due to COVID-19 they are not allowing visitors so they are taking a different approach.
“Tracy, Mia, and I are creating a pen-pal program with the residents at different nursing homes around town and the students at Badin. Each student will write a letter to their “grand-friend,” once a month and will get a response back. In addition to this, we are hoping to create some crafts for the residents in hopes to bring joy to them during this isolating time. Also, we hope that by the end of the year we will all be able to meet our pen-pals in person if COVID regulations permit this,” Covey said.
Whether they were affected by COVID or not, the Class of 2021 is providing for others and doing amazing things everyday.
