The end of the school year is coming up quickly, and all upperclassmen know what that means, exams. It also means it's time to bring out the Quizlets, study guides and notes. However, not all teachers have exams, they can assign end of the year projects, which may be a research paper or a debate.
Students ask their teachers what they should study, and if they give a study guide. However, reading over notes and getting a study guide isn’t the only way to study.
“I would suggest students make sure to budget their time wisely and give more time to classes where they know they may struggle. Make sure to be proactive and seek clarification from teachers if needed on assignments and content,” Mr. Schuckman said.
“It is always a good idea to start by organizing your notes for all the topics that will be covered by the exam. Looking over a small amount each day for 20 minutes or so is much more effective than trying to cram everything into your brain,” Ms. Trotter said.
“Try going over old tests and quizzes, focus on remembering material. Relearning the problems you may have had trouble with. Try it out first on your own before using notes,” Mrs. Bierbaum said.
Studying for an exam can be rather difficult since not everyone studies or learns the same way.
“Try to teach it to someone, I did it with my dog. Re-writing notes, looking over study guides and rewriting answers The act of writing it will help you learn it,” Mrs. Derosa said.
“Don’t just memorize the work, try studying with other people. Have study groups and create your own tests, if you learn better in a group,” Mrs. Gazin said.
For visual learners Mrs. Breetz suggested looking at diagrams and watching the lecture videos if you're an auditory learner. Mrs. Heinrich offered the advice of just spreading out your study time. Heinrich said to take your time and look over the important information from your notes, highlight it and continue to study that portion.
Adding that you should not study just the night before, but three days or a week before the exam so you feel comfortable with the information. This is a great way to study if you have trouble with procrastination or testing anxiety.
Mr. Zimmerman also gave the advice of asking for a study guide and re-writing out your answers to prepare for the exam. For example re writing math formulas, important facts for an essay, answers from your study guide or the definitions of vocabulary words.
The teachers have great advice for studying so you can be prepared for exam week. The best advice is to always ask questions when you don’t understand and use your time wisely so you are not pulling an all nightery the night before exams.
