A journalist's life can consist of writing, answering and asking questions. It may seem like an easy job but not entirely, unless you are a part of the Badin Banner.
Journalism students are required to write at least two stories a month to keep students and staff with the latest news. Students can take the class up to three years and learn ways to improve their writing skills and learn more about the world around them. The class is advised by Mrs. Macalevich, better known as Mrs. Mac.
Writing feature stories was the top favorite of the Badin Banner staff. Feature stories are stories about almost anything from interview with teachers to the latest hits for music and newest superhero drama. When features are written they tend to involve the student bodies opinions.
“School opinion stories where I get to send out google forms to the school. I enjoy reading everyone's responses, and some of them are really funny” said sophomore Ava Wesner.
“I love writing Recipes With a Redhead. I get to make food that my mother taught me while sharing recipes to people at the same time. I also get to try different recipes I've never tried before and I get to see if it's worth making an article about it or not, (it usually is),” said junior Jillian Palomino.
Being a journalist can be rough somedays with coming up with a new story, meeting the deadline or taking an AP style quiz. However a majority of the days are always impactful and fun.
“It's honestly fun! I enjoy writing the stories and also reading everyone else's stories. I definitely would take this class again,” said sophomore Marie Hootman.
“Lots of fun collaborating with your classmates. You get to be creative because nothing is out of the realm for us to write about,” said sophomore Patrick Ray.
“It's both easy and stressful at the same time. Some weeks I know what I'm going to write, but others I can't think of anything because other students beat me to it, but it helps me think outside the box when it comes to writing articles,” said Palomino.
The Badin Banner has not stopped at writing paper but has added new ways to make news more interesting. Podcasts were very popular on the app Spotify and ideas were thrown around by staff members to make a few. Ryan Kirkendall and Jillian Palomino came up with their very own podcast. Palomino’s podcast is called the Badin Cast, this podcast talks about different topics with different people.
Kirkendall’s podcast is titled Conversations with Mr. Cole. Kirkendall talks with Mr.cole about different topics and has a new guest on his podcast or returning guest.
