Homecoming is something that many high school students look forward to every year, but nobody really knows where it came from.
The tradition of Homecoming was made to welcome back students, and to celebrate a school or organization. The first Homecoming event was in 1911, when the University of Missouri and the University of Kansas played football against each other. It was such a popular event that it became an annual thing.
Other traditions such as parades, dances, and crowning kings and queens were also put in effect in 1911.
At Stephen T. Badin High School, we only crown a king and queen, but many schools do a lot more than that.
All schools usually have a king and queen, but sometimes they add princes and princesses to the mix. The seniors of the school are usually the kings and queens while underclassmen get the title of princes and princesses.
The kings and queens of previous years always come back to crown the successors but if they can’t attend the crowning, some designated person at the school will do it.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t have a Homecoming dance this year due to COVID-19, but that tradition is something that many students love. Girls search and search for dresses until they finally find the perfect one, and the boys find the courage to ask the girls to the dance.
Traditions like the parade, the football game, and the dance are the core events that really make Homecoming great and we all are praying that we can experience all the fun in the future.
