📖 Our Story: From the Back Steps to a Movement
Our name isn't just a catchy phrase; it is exactly how we started. Back Step Strays was born when our director found herself completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of stray cats showing up on her literal back steps. Desperate to help them, she began reaching out for assistance, only to realize there was a massive lack of resources in our area.
Finally, one organization offered a lifeline: they would provide financial assistance if she was willing to do the hard work on the ground. She accepted the challenge without hesitation. Realizing she could fill a critical void in our community, she officially launched Back Step Strays in October 2023 to spay and neuter as many stray animals as possible—stopping the cycle before animals become strays to begin with.
🌟 What We Do & Tooting Our Own Horn!
We are a 100% volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit, meaning every ounce of our time, energy, and funding goes directly to the animals. We are incredibly proud of the massive impact our dedicated team has made in a short amount of time:
1,000+ Spay/Neuters: Since our inception in October 2023, we have successfully helped over 1,000 animals get spayed and neutered!
Compassionate Rehabilitation: When possible, we take in sick and injured strays, as well as abandoned kittens, providing them with the medical care and love they need to heal before adopting them into permanent, loving homes.
Community Support: We believe in keeping pets with their families, which is why we actively provide pet food for a local food pantry to support owners facing hard times.
TNVR Initiatives: Through our Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return programs, we humanely manage feral populations, keeping them healthy and preventing thousands of unwanted kittens from being born.
🏗️ Big Things are Happening: We Are Growing!
We are thrilled to announce that we are currently in the process of opening a brick-and-mortar facility! This physical location will allow us to save more lives, house more animals in need, and expand our community outreach. But taking this massive step means we need our community's support now more than ever.
