Backpack Wallet App: Download and Setup on iPhone, Android

The Backpack Wallet app is a self-custodial crypto wallet and exchange for iPhone and Android, and downloading it takes under a minute. Get it from the App Store, from Google Play, or from the official APK at backpack.app/download if your Android device runs without Play Services. After that you create or import a wallet, choose a starting network, and write your recovery phrase down on paper. Budget five minutes end to end.

One thing worth knowing before you install, because almost nobody mentions it: the mobile app and the browser extension are not the same product. Backpack's own download page splits them. Mobile gives you Wallet and Exchange. The extension gives you Wallet only.

The mobile app does more than the extension

Backpack's own download page splits them. Mobile gives you Exchange and Wallet. The extension gives you Wallet only.

That means the phone app includes spot, margin and futures trading from a cross-margined account, yield on collateral, and the self-custody wallet, all in one install. The Backpack Chrome extension is purely the wallet: swaps, dApps, NFTs.

So if you've already got the extension and you're wondering whether the app adds anything, yes, quite a lot.

Worth flagging early: access to Backpack Exchange and its trading features isn't available everywhere. Backpack states this directly on the Play Store listing. The wallet half works regardless of where you are. The trading half depends on your jurisdiction, so check before you plan around it.

Check the developer line reads Backpack Technologies Ltd before you tap Get. That's the detail that separates the real app from a clone, and clones copy everything else: icon, screenshots, description, even the name with one character changed.

You'll need iOS 16.4 or later. Older iPhones won't run it.

Download Backpack Wallet on Android

Google Play is the route for most people. Search for Backpack Wallet, and verify two things:

• Developer shows as Backpack App

• Package ID is app.backpack.mobile, visible in the Play Store URL

A fake listing can match the name and icon. It can't match the package ID.

One honest note if it applies to you: an accessibility review on the Play listing reports that screen reader support has been broken for months, with tab navigation the only part still working. If you use VoiceOver or TalkBack, test before you move funds across.

The APK question

Backpack publishes an official APK on its download page. Should you use it?

For most people, no. Play handles updates automatically, and a wallet running an old build is a wallet you have to think about. Sideloading means you're now responsible for checking for new versions yourself.

The APK is the right answer in two situations: your device has no Play Services, or Play isn't available in your region.

If that's you, download it only from backpack.app/download. Not APKMirror, not APKPure, not a site that came up first for "backpack wallet apk." Those mirrors sometimes host clean builds and sometimes host repackaged ones with an extra payload, and you have no practical way to tell the difference. For a normal app that's a manageable gamble. For an app holding your private keys it isn't.

Android will warn you about installing from an unknown source. That warning is correct. Proceed only if you're certain of where the file came from.

Setting up the Backpack wallet

Open the Backpack app and choose Wallet.

New user? Tap create a new wallet. Already have one? There's an "I already have a wallet" option that takes your recovery phrase and a new local password.

Pick a starting network. Solana, Ethereum, Sui, Eclipse, Monad, whichever you'll use first. You add the rest from wallet settings afterwards, and it's the same recovery phrase across all of them.

Set a password. This unlocks the app on this phone. It's not your recovery phrase and it can't recover anything.

Write down the Secret Recovery Phrase. On paper. Offline.

The list of what not to do is short and non-negotiable:

• No screenshots, including the one your phone auto-backs-up to iCloud

• Not in Notes, not in a cloud-synced password manager

• Never sent through Telegram, Discord, WhatsApp or email

• Never given to anyone claiming to be Backpack support, because they will never ask

Lose the phrase and lose the phone, and the wallet is gone. Backpack cannot restore it. There's no ticket to raise.

Running the app and the extension together

You don't have to pick. Import the same recovery phrase into both and you're looking at one wallet from two devices.

Common setup: extension on the laptop for dApps and swaps, app on the phone for balances, sends and exchange access while you're out.

Do bear in mind that NFT Collection Locking only applies inside Backpack itself. Import that seed into a third-party wallet and the lock doesn't travel with it.

A five-point check before you fund it

Most losses trace back to one of these, not to anything clever.

1. Downloaded from the official store listing or backpack.app, with the developer name verified

2. Recovery phrase written on paper and stored away from the device

3. Password unique to this wallet

4. Network double-checked before your first transfer, because sending an asset over the wrong chain is usually permanent

5. A small test transaction first, before you move anything that would hurt to lose

That fifth one costs a cent on Solana and has saved a lot of people a lot of money.
