Technology Use in Adolescents

We live in a world where we are more connected than ever by technology and yet, at times, it feels as though technology drives a wedge between us in our ability to conduct face-to-face interactions and be present. Our goal is for staff, students, and parents to understand to role that positive digital citizenship and usage can have on our student's lives!

What is positive digital citizenship?

Digital citizenship is the ability to effectively and responsibly use the internet and other technologies to communicate, engage, and/or advocate in the digital space. This means immersing one's self in content that stimulates the mind in a positive and engaging way.

How does technology use influence mental health?

Excessive technology usage and immersion in negative content is linked to increased prevalence of depressive and anxious feelings (in everyone, not just kids!) and is associated with struggles of emotional regulation and compulsion. It is important to set boundaries and limits on how much time we are using screens, as well as what we are looking at when we do!

What can I do to help?

The bottom line is that digital citizenship and proper technology use is a collaborative process and starts with the individual. See below for resources and information on positive technology use!

Concerned about your child's digital usage?

There are several apps that can give parents oversight as to what their child is seeing and doing on their digital device - see below links for info on these apps!
