Carbon Footprint
As a climate scientist, the unprecedented climate change resulting from global warming is something I think about on a daily basis. While achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 in line with the Paris Agreement may seem like a tall order, each and every one of us can all take small steps toward achieving the same goal. Although small steps may seem trivial, being persistent is key to having them add up and make a difference in the end!
In a nutshell, being environmentally friendly is all about following the 3 R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle. Reducing is the priority, reusing is a good alternative if reducing is not possible and recycling is the last resort. Here are some specific environmentally friendly tips we try to keep in mind to reduce our family’s carbon footprint:
Walk, bike or take public transportation when possible
If you must fly, pack light, and lower the shades and open the vents while on the plane
Use natural sunlight as a light source when possible, or use clean energy sources if available
Use energy-efficient appliances and insulate your home
Eat lower down the food chain, buy local and never waste food
Use "residual" heat when cooking
Bring your own grocery and produce bags when grocery shopping or buy products with minimal package
Buy “misfit” produce. Many perfectly fine produce never make it to the grocery store because they are deemed too aesthetically unappealing to sell. Buying misfit produce is not only economical, but also environmentally friendly.
Say no to disposable cups, plates and eating utensils. This goes for disposable straws too, that are not only harmful to the environmental, but also to marine animals. Get in the habit of carrying a travel mug.
Start (worm) composting
Plant trees --- it's also fun for the kids!

Use cloth diapers. Not only do they encourage your little one to potty train earlier, but they also reduce one of the currently largest contributors to consumer waste in landfills. Using cloth diapers also ensures that the waste is treated properly instead of being a future potential contaminant of groundwater. Handwashing them with gloves on and hanging them out to dry under the sun will have the most positive environmental impact, and the sun will also help to disinfect them.
Wash clothes in cold water and hang dry them
