The ‘ANT’ cold recycling of asphalt concrete technology uses 100% RAP (Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement) to produce Bituminous Stabilized Mix (BSM).
Foam-Bitumen based BSM
Bitumen Stabilized Material (BSM) is generally bitumen-emulsion/ foamed bitumen treated reclaimed-asphalt-pavement (RAP) and is used in construction of base layer.
'ANT' BSM
But 'ANT' Modifier based BSM drastically reduces consumption of bitumen emulsion/ foam-bitumen. Aqueous solution of “ANT” Stabilizer is used for creating mix with RAP.

Rejuvenation of the bitumen film on the RAP aggregates is a unique feature of the ‘ANT’ Modifier. The binding properties of bitumen in RAP is restored to the extent that there is no need to add fresh bitumen emulsion or foam bitumen. But, the general practice of adding bitumen emulsion is followed where RAP and virgin aggregates are used. However, the quantity of emulsion required is drastically reduced. This technology is economical, simple and it reduces time of execution.
The ‘ANT’ Modifier is a complex organic material that is used in BSM (Bitumen Stabilized Mix). The modifier enters into oxidation-reduction reactions with molecular oxygen on the particles of RAP/ virgin aggregates. New crystalline bonds are established between the aggregate particles due to these reactions. The bitumen film on aggregates gets rejuvenated and regains its binder properties. The ‘ANT’ Modifier is non-flammable, nonexplosive and easily transportable by any suitable means.
Rules for Using Modifier
The ‘ANT’ Modifier is a liquid product. It is dissolved into the water to be used for mixing RAP and cement. The step-by-step methodology for calculating quantity of ‘ANT’ Modifier is as given below: –
Quantity of RAP material (QRAP) is calculated
Quantity of water (Qw) needed to bring the RAP material, cement and water mix to Optimum Moisture Content (OMC) is calculated. Proper care is taken to account for existing moisture contents of the aggregate and soil
Qw = QRAP x OMC% (OMC% factor normally varies from 4 to 8%)
Quantity of ‘ANT’ Modifier (QM) is calculated using the formula
QM= QRAP x 0.007% (the multiplying factor may vary from 0.005% to 0.01%)
Quantity of cement (Qc) is calculated using the formula
Qc = QRAP x C% (C% factor normally varies from 1% to 2%)
The calculated quantity of ‘ANT’ Modifier, QM, is dissolved in the calculated quantity of water Qw. This aqueous solution of ‘ANT’ Modifier as well as Qc quantity of cement are than mixed with QRAP quantity of RAP material to produce the mix at OMC
The mix at OMC is then compacted to the design density.
Uniqueness of 'ANT' BSM
Environmental Safety
The 'ANT' Modifier is completely safe for humans and nature. In addition, the use of technology allows the use of various types of waste, which solves a number of environmental problems.
High Strength
The 'ANT' BSM Road is not only highly durable, but also resistant to deformation, loss of fines and freeze-thaw cycles. The great durability of the created material makes it possible to operate roads in absolutely all climatic zones.
Non-Stop Execution
Traffic can be allowed almost immediately after the completion of compaction of freshly laid 'ANT' BSM Road.
Minimal Maintenance
'ANT' BSM Road is free from shrinkage-cracks. In fact the cement does not undergo reactions that generate the shrinkage cracks due to heat-of-hydration produced in the process. This ensures that Stone Roads need minimal maintenance after construction.
Versatility
It can be produced -
Directly on the road in a single stage operation using the Recyclers.
Using Mixing Plants (without heating) and subsequently laying at site using paver.
Cost Reduction
The cost of road construction gets drastically reduced due to: -
Near elimination of use of fresh foamed bitumen/ emulsion in RAP
Reduction in quantity of cement
Reduction of the time of construction works
It is estimated that cost of roads construction generally get reduced by more than 50% as compared to conventional technologies and more than 10% as compared to construction of BSM with foamed bitumen/ emulsion. At the same time durability gets enhanced due to 'ANT' Modifier.
Construction Methods
Cement is uniformly spread @ approx. 1% to 2% by weight of BSM. Pulverization of existing bituminous layers is done using recycler to reclaim the distressed layer and the layer/s beneath it up to the required depth. Depth of pulverization is determined as per design and the cutters in the recycler are positioned accordingly. Aqueous solution of 'ANT' Modifier is injected into the pulverization hood/ chamber of recycler at required flow rate. Process of pulverization ensures thorough mixing of the pulverized material, cement and aqueous solution of 'ANT' Modifier. As the recycler moves ahead, it leaves behind a trail of above-mentioned thorough mix.
An earth compacter follows the Recycler to do preliminary compaction. This is followed by grading to give proper slopes and then by final compaction at optimum moisture content. Traffic is opened once the final compaction is over and work is taken-up in adjoining lane. This ensures rapid construction with no joint between different lanes.
BSM can also be produced using the Mixing Plants (concrete mixing plant, soil mixing plant or asphalt mixing plant without heating) and subsequently laid at site using paver.
