March Updates: Attendance, Read Across America, and
Upcoming Events at Robles Elementary
Dear Robles Bobcat Families,
As we transition into the month of March, I want to take a moment to emphasize the importance of attendance and punctuality. Each day of school offers valuable learning opportunities, and consistent attendance ensures that your child can fully benefit from our educational programs. Missing even one day a week can significantly impact your child's academic progress over the course of the school year and throughout their educational journey. If a student misses one day of school per week from Kindergarten through 5th grade, they will lose approximately 216 days over those 6 years, which is 1.2 school years missed.
Please remember that toys, blankets, and personal tablets are not necessary at school. We provide a wide array of manipulatives and learning tools to support your child's learning experience here at Robles Elementary. Please help us by reviewing with your child and checking their bag in the mornings as these items become a distraction in the classroom to learning.
In preparation for the upcoming AASA testing next month, it's essential to help your child feel confident and prepared. Encourage regular reading at home and practice math skills to reinforce classroom learning. Your involvement and support make a significant difference in your child's readiness for these assessments.
March also marks Read Across America, a celebration of reading and literacy. I encourage you to engage with your child by reading together at home. This shared activity not only fosters a love of reading but also strengthens literacy skills that are vital to academic success. Your student has a library book that they can read with you. Additionally, they have reading passages from the nightly homework as well.
Furthermore, please ensure that your child completes their nightly homework assignments. Consistent practice reinforces learning and helps prepare students for classroom activities and assessments. All students have nightly homework that is sent home weekly with students.
Finally, mark your calendars for our Student-Led Parent-Teacher Conferences scheduled for March 13th and 14th. These conferences provide valuable insights into your child's progress and goals. Reach out to your child’s teacher to schedule a meeting.
We will also be hosting Preschool and Kindergarten Round-Up on the same dates, March 13th and 14th, for incoming Kindergarten and Preschool students. Returning PK students will have the needed paperwork sent home. This event allows parents to enroll their children and learn more about our programs.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child's education. Together, we can ensure every student at Robles Elementary reaches their full potential.
Warm regards,
Dustie Gunn

Little Voters: 1st Graders Explore the Election Process
In November, first graders at Robles Elementary got a hands-on lesson in democracy as they participated in a mock election. They experienced firsthand how voting works, learning about the importance of making informed choices, respecting different opinions, and the significance of every vote. This exciting and educational experience helped them understand the role of elections in our country.
Before casting their ballots, students learned why elections are important and how voting allows people to have a say in decisions. We wanted the students to experience the excitement of an election while understanding the importance of making a choice. Even though this mock election is just for fun, it helps the students understand real-world voting.
As part of our mock election experience, our first graders integrated math by collecting and interpreting data through surveys and vote counting. After casting their ballots, students practiced
tallying votes, organizing them into charts, and
creating simple bar graphs to visually compare results. They analyzed which candidate or choice
received the most and least votes, strengthening their understanding of numbers, counting, and comparisons. These activities not only reinforced essential math skills like data representation and interpretation but also helped students see how math is used in real-life situations, making learning both meaningful and engaging.
Our mock election results matched the national results, with Donald Trump winning the presidency. This gave students a chance to compare their votes with the real election and learn more about the democratic process. They saw how individual choices add up to make big decisions, helping them understand the importance of voting.
The mock election sparked excitement and plenty of discussion. Students were happy to learn that their voice MATTERS and is IMPORTANT!
