The weather is changing indicating the end of the school year is just around the corner. We have one quarter of school left and as always it will go by fast. As parents it is important that you encourage your child to finish the year strong. Here at the middle school we are seeing great success with our newly implemented “Accountability Plan”. Students are taking their education seriously and putting in the effort to learn, grow, and reach their goals. On our most recent Galileo assessments we had 85% of our students meet or exceed their goal in one or more areas. The reason for our increases are due to the efforts of our students, parents, teachers, and support staff. This month we would like to feature our outstanding 6th grade team!

6th Grade

The 6th graders have leveled up their confidence in essay-writing! Relearning the process was a tough start but with focus, drills and determination, many have understood their purpose in writing. What’s even more amazing is the spirit of helpfulness that the kids showed to their peers. They were looking out for each other and volunteered to help other aspiring writers in the class. They know what they need to have a positive learning experience - each other. And they are making it happen.

Our youngest Eagles prove that having an open-mind and a positive mindset for learning can make a huge difference.

The wonders of Ancient Civilizations - that was what the 6th graders have spent time studying about. Students got to choose the ancient civilization they wanted to explore. They did their own research and wrote informative essays relevant to their field of study. They also built a miniature representation of famous landmarks, in the form of dioramas. The final challenge was to present it in class. The speaking activity was a revelation of eloquent speakers in the classroom.

Students have just finished learning about LCM-least common multiple and GCF-greatest common factor. They learned to apply GCF while using the distributive property.

Students have discovered that not being fluent with multiplication facts creates a real hardship for them. We decided each student will individually focus on only those math facts they do not know by rote memorization.

We frequently use Zearn.org to supplement our curriculum. Check it out and have your children explain the work they are doing there. 💖

Students have just finished working on a small group project which addressed the following science standards:

MS-PS3-2. Develop a model to describe that when the arrangement of objects interacting at a distance changes, different amounts of potential energy are stored in the system.

MS-PS3-5 Construct, use, and present arguments to support the claim that when the kinetic energy of an object changes, energy is transferred to or from the object.

Students learned about kinetic energy, potential energy, friction, and conservation of energy. They researched, created a blueprint, and built a paper roller coaster track. Upon completion the groups presented their final product and talked about the effects of energy in its various stages. Final test was to roll a marble through the track to see if it actually worked.

Time is passing quickly with under 50 school days left! As a reminder, Spring Break is the week of March 21st. Mrs. Cristales, Mrs. Bauerelen, Mrs. O’Barr, Ms. Sankey, Mrs. Woodley, and Ms. Fuller are wishing you all the best, stay well and stay safe.
