Dear AHS Families,
As October unfolds and we approach the end of the first quarter, I want to take a moment to highlight what makes our school community so special: our commitment to supporting one another and fostering an inclusive environment where every student can thrive. We are dedicated to building a school culture rooted in respect, kindness, and support, where each student feels empowered to reach their fullest potential.
Our students continue to inspire us with their hard work and achievements, and we love celebrating their success! Fall sports are in full swing, and we’re incredibly proud of our Fall athletes in Crew, Field Hockey, Golf, Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, and Soccer for their dedication and teamwork. A special shout-out to our Cross Country teams: both had a fantastic day at the State Championship meet this past Saturday, with the boys' team finishing 3rd and the girls' team finishing 2nd. Abby Van Hoof and Ying Cheng earned All-State Honors, and for the first time since 2014, both teams have qualified for the State Open, which will take place this Thursday. We wish them the best as they continue to make us proud! In the arts, our theater and music programs are equally hard at work. Additionally, our crew team participated in the Head of the Charles race in Boston last weekend. This was a huge accomplishment as it is the largest regatta in the world, and we were one of a few public high schools that rowed. Furthermore, yesterday at the head of the horseman regatta in Glastonbury, the girl's novice eight boat won first place. Congrats to them on this tremendous victory!
The cast and crew are preparing for our fall play, Puffs (flyer below), and we’re excited to see their creativity and passion come to life on stage. These successes across academics, arts, and athletics are a testament to the power of collaboration and perseverance—values we strive to instill in every Falcon.
October is also a time to recognize Mental Health Awareness and to remind students and families of the support systems available at school. We encourage all students to take advantage of our counseling services, where they can find a listening ear and helpful resources. Teachers and staff are here to support every student’s well-being and are always available to guide students to the resources they need. October is also National Bullying Prevention Month. We believe that every student deserves to feel safe and valued, and we’re committed to ensuring that our school is a place of respect and inclusion, where students feel connected to each other and to their teachers. This past week was Spirit Week, and it was a great opportunity for our students to showcase their school pride and come together as a unified community. The students were creative and enthusiastic as they showed their Falcon spirit! (Pictures below.)
A strong, inclusive school community includes our families, too! We’re excited to remind you that all Avon Public School conferences will be held on December 5th and 6th. Please review the information that was sent out on Thursday regarding signing up. The parent teacher conferencing software will go live on Wednesday, October 30th at 12:00pm. The conferences offer a chance to connect with teachers, discuss your child’s progress, and learn more about the resources available to support their academic and personal growth.
Thank you for being a part of our school’s journey as we build a community of support, inclusion, and growth. I’m grateful to each of you—students, families, and staff—for making our school a place where everyone can soar. It’s a joy to watch our students grow and achieve, and I look forward to seeing all that they accomplish this year.
With pride,
Dr. Lockhart
