Dear AHS Families,
As we get ready to begin the fourth week of the school year, I wanted to take a moment to share some highlights and important information with you. It has been an exciting few weeks filled with energy, enthusiasm, and a lot of learning! We are so proud of how our students have settled into their classes and routines, and we appreciate your continued support. We started off the school year with teachers using the first few days to build a learning community where students feel safe, welcome, and willing to take risks. Teachers prioritized getting to know you activities, icebreakers, and collaborative problem solving activities to provide opportunities for students to get to know each other on a deeper level. This year, we will continue our school wide focus on the Portrait of a Graduate skill of collaboration, and will also layer in activities that encourage another POG skill of critical and creative thinking. We believe these skills will help students develop a sound character, realize their potential and be better prepared for a successful life after high school.
One of the ways we are supporting students’ social and emotional growth is through our Advisory Program. During advisory sessions this year, we will again work to develop the POG dispositions of Independence and Adaptability, as well as Cultural Competence. Students will engage in lessons that focus on important topics like Goal Setting, Building Positive Relationships, Responsible Decision Making and Digital Citizenship. These advisory lessons are designed to equip students with the tools they need to succeed, not only academically but also in life beyond school. We believe that fostering social-emotional skills is just as important as academic achievement, and we are excited to see how these lessons help our students grow.
As we move forward, I’d like to highlight the letter sent out to families a few days ago about the importance of maintaining high behavioral expectations. At AHS we emphasize Respect, Responsibility, and Kindness as core values that guide how we interact with one another. These values are not only crucial for academic success but also for creating a school culture where everyone feels safe and respected. Please continue to encourage your children to respect others by listening, using positive language, and following school guidelines. We also want them to take responsibility for their actions and seek help when needed. Finally, we hope to see them showing kindness to peers and staff by being considerate and offering support to others. We are committed to reinforcing these expectations both in the classroom and throughout the school. Our staff will continue to have conversations with students about how these behaviors contribute to a positive school environment.
As we head into the next month, we encourage families to stay involved by keeping the lines of communication open. We will continue to share information on any changes such as our morning drop off procedures (which we hope has been going smoother). Also, you all received communication from the Office of Information Technology regarding the opening of the Schoology Parent Portal so that you are all able to see what your children are learning in their courses. Any questions regarding access to the parent portal should be forwarded to it@avon.k12.ct.us. We will also be happy to answer any questions you may have at Open House coming up on Thursday of this week.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to making this school year a successful one. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your partnership is vital to the success of our students, and we are grateful for all that you do to support them.
In Partnership,
Dr. Lockhart

INTERNSHIP OFFICE & OTHER STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES
PICTURES
This past Tuesday, 48 AHS students showcased their summer internship learning experiences. Over the course of 60-120 hours, interns were exploring post high school options, sparking curiosity, developing skills, gaining hands-on job experience, and applying concepts from the classrooms in eleven different job clusters. These ranged from STEM, Agriculture, Government, Business, Transportation, Education, Marketing, and more. One was located in Germany, several at UCONN Storrs, downtown Hartford offices, and the surrounding areas. Some of the many highlights include: creating mental health podcasts, participating in medical research, presenting at UCONN Avery Point campus, learning about organic farming, working with senior citizens, learning differential equations, multiple forms of coding, machine learning, interviewing our State Treasurer, working with patients battling cancer, and much more.
