PRINCIPAL'S NEWSLETTER

Dear AHS Community,

Congratulations and thank you to AHS Student Government and advisor Mr. Pellegrino for organizing the 2021 Homecoming events. A picture is worth a thousand words!

Avon High School is in the middle of its 2021 Homecoming Celebration!

Avon High’s Student Government has planned a week’s worth of creative and exciting Homecoming events. Students began the week by dressing up in different ways during the school day to show their spirit.

Students began the week by dressing up in different ways during the school day to show their spirit.

Last night, we held a HOMECOMING BONFIRE in Sperry Park that was attended by about 200 students. Frankie’s Food Truck was also there. Thanks to deputy fire marshal Tom Post and the Avon Volunteer Fire Department Cadets for their help in making the bonfire possible.

This afternoon, the school day ended with a HOMECOMING PEP RALLY on the football field. Students and teachers competed in tug-of-war, costume races, and bubble soccer. There was also a lip sync performance and the presentation of the HOMECOMING COURT.

At halftime during tonight’s football game against Farmington, the HOMECOMING KING AND QUEEN will be announced.

And the HOMECOMING SEMI-FORMAL will be held under a tent at the high school Saturday night from 7:00 to 10:00pm. (Students should be prepared for a chilly night!) There will be a DJ, dance floor, and light refreshments donated by Whole Foods of Avon. Special thanks to the AHS Booster Club and AHS PTO. Their generous support has made this event possible.

THE TENT IS UP!

  • IDs are to be worn at all times during the school day.

  • Please pick up you school ID and school photos from Mrs. Tubridy.

  • There will be another Make Up Photo day on November 12, 2021 between 10:30-1:30pm.

NURSE'S CORNER

As we all come together again we would like to remind families that CoVid symptoms can be very subtle initially and often mistaken for seasonal allergies or a slight cold. We even see GI symptoms in some cases. So, if your student experiences any of these symptoms please err on the side of caution and keep them home from school and reach out to one of the Nurses for guidance.

Thank you - if we all work together we can remain in school and sports! Stay Well!

Wishing you all a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season!

Ms. Lane and Ms. Twohig

AHS STUDENT CLUBS

Avon High School Theatre

~ Ms. Paterson

After sharing our cast list previously in the Friday Falcon, AHS Theatre would like to introduce the crew of the fall play, 'It's A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play," which will be presented November 19th and 20th in the AHS auditorium at 7:30pm. The crew has started their prep work and is very excited to present this piece to you. Students in our crew will be providing all of the live sound effects, or "Foley effects," a term coined to pay homage to Jack Donovan Foley, who began his work with Universal Studios in 1914 providing sound effects for films. His methods of using objects and synchronizing perfect timing became widely used in cinema and also for the live radio dramas that people enjoyed at home between the 1920s and 1940s, sitting around their radio to enjoy a radio show together. This tradition didn't lose ground until the 1950s when the advent of television started drawing away the radio drama audience.

UNICEF and Amnesty International

~ Mr. Abrams

On Sunday, October 10th about twenty students (most were members of the Amnesty International and the UNICEF clubs), parents, faculty, and friends met at 10am on the AHS track to join together in the Connecticut “Walk Against Hate” sponsored by the ADL. We simply walked around the track for an hour. And yet…it was not just a walk – it was an opportunity to move as individuals, families, and a community toward a future without antisemitism, racism, and all forms of bigotry. Although we raised some money for ADL, this was not our primary focus. Our vision was to raise awareness that hate has no place in our communities, and that we want to be a part of the work towards building a world with no antisemitism, racism, bigotry, and bias in any and all of its insidious forms. Our students, once again, convinced me that we all should be unabashedly hopeful about the future with young adults like this willing to make the world a better place. Clearly, the world still has much to learn from our students.
