PRINCIPAL'S NEWSLETTER

Dear Falcons,

Thank you for another great week! Day after day I am amazed at all that takes place at AHS. I was able to spend time observing various classes throughout the week, and what I saw solidified why we are such a high performing school. Our faculty members believe that all students can learn and meet high standards. They work extremely hard, sometimes they even match while doing so (see picture below). Although we recognize that all students don't learn in the same way, and some may face various challenges, we all know that we have what it takes to meet the needs of our students. We hold true to the belief that all students should be offered a rigorous and engaging course of study. On a daily basis, there is evidence of a commitment to supporting people, programs, and practices that lead to the accomplishment of our school and district goals. It is my hope that anyone walking through our school can attest that we have a safe, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating learning environment. Above all else, our goal is that students feel respected and connected with our faculty as they are engaging in high quality learning.

Pictured below is some of the evidence I have seen this week of all I have written about. Students are cognitively engaged, thinking deeply and many are asked to collaboratively problem solve. Overall, great teaching and learning happens at AHS.

Did you know AHS has a unique internship program available to juniors and seniors fall, winter, spring, and summer? Since 2014, our Achieve Internship Program has successfully placed hundreds of student interns in over 200 local and international businesses, and organizations. Our mission is to provide exploratory experiences outside the classroom, which will allow a smoother transition from high school to college, the workplace, or military service.

Additionally, our Achieve Internship Program provides valuable opportunities for community hosts to mentor, and train motivated and productive students, while helping them gain valuable skills, experiences, and connections.

Juniors and Seniors, if you are curious about exploring interests outside the classroom, and earning ½ Mastery Based Learning credit, contact Mrs. Mascoli, mmascoli@avon.k12.ct.us, to discuss internship possibilities.

Parents, if your business, or organization might be interested in partnering as an internship host, contact Mrs. Mascoli, mmascoli@avon.k12.ct.us.

Attention Seniors who are interested in applying to UConn.

Deaf Awareness Week

Did you know that Monday (9/ 19/ 22) begins Deaf Awareness Week? It is also called International Week of the Deaf (IWD). Deaf Awareness week is celebrated annually the last full week of September (Monday through Sunday) and ends with International Day of the Deaf on the last Sunday of September. The purpose of Deaf Awareness Week is to increase public awareness of deaf issues, people, and culture. The American Sign Language classes created posters that have been placed around the school to celebrate the culture, heritage, and language unique to deaf people of the world. Starting on Monday, students are encouraged to take time while in the halls to become aware of many aspects of Deaf culture and American Sign Language.
