Employed with Avery County Schools since 2003

Served as Avery County's GEAR UP Coordinator and Mayland Dual Enrollment Admissions Counselor during '04/'05 school year

Subjects taught include U.S. History, Computer Applications, Economics/Government, British Literature, Title I Reading, Career Decisions, 6th Grade Science, 6th, 7th & 8th Grade Social Studies

As anyone who knows me will confirm, I love studying history, politics and anything related to Social Studies. It has been one of my passions since I was young, and I try to pass that enthusiasm on to my students. Topics of particular interest to me include American Presidents (especially Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, JFK & Lyndon Johnson), social history, revolutionary thinkers and local history. I love living in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and I am very proud to call this area home!

I have worked with the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games since I was 13 years old as a member of the carpentry crew under my grandfather, and more recently my father. I currently serve as the Assistant General Manager for Mountain Operations and Camping Director. I work in the office throughout the year, helping prepare for the largest gathering of Scottish clans in the world!

I am proud to serve as the Assistant Chief of Linville Volunteer Fire Department. I have been a member with the department since 1999, and was elected Board Secretary in 2006. I have been associated with the department since birth. My grandfather was a founding member of Linville Fire and Rescue, and my father retired from the department with over 20 years of service. I am also a member of the Avery County Ladder Company.

Through my work with the fire department, I have received certification as a Level II firefighter and I am a licensed EMT-Intermediate. I am also a certified Rescue Technician and a CPR/First Aid Instructor. I would like to become a Firefighter I & II/Live Burn Instructor sometime in the near future. We'll see...
