Activity Overview
We are each different and unique, with different stories and ideas, and that’s what makes the human community so wonderful! In this activity, students will develop a deeper sense of self while exploring the lens of diversity and making connections through song and text. They will then use what they have explored to make a representation of themselves and others using a variety of arts and crafts materials.
What You Need
An ABC of Equality by Chana Ginelle Ewing on Epic
"I Am Enough" by Miss Katie video
Child-safe mirror
Drawing utensils (crayons, markers, colored pencils)
Steps
Read An ABC of Equality by Chana Ginelle Ewing with students. While reading the story, pause throughout to check for understanding. Discuss topics that the students may have questions or confusion about. Tell students that there is diversity all around us each and everyday and that helps to make every single person special and important.
Play "I Am Enough" by Ms. Katie and learn the song together.
Give the student a mirror or take a picture of their face. Display the mirror or picture in a place where the student can use it while creating a self-portrait using the materials listed, or any other materials of your choice.
Find a picture of the student’s family members or friends. Have the student repeat the portrait process, this time making a portrait of their loved ones.
Read the People Poem with students.
Showcase all of the faces the student has made and invite friends and family members to view them all together. “We make space for all of us.”
