Activity Overview
Families show how important they are to each other by taking care of each other. One way that children learn about caring for family members is through the act of making and sharing food. A relative might bring our favorite cookies over every time we see her, or we contribute every night to dinner plans by making the salad, setting the table, or doing the dishes. In this activity, students get an opportunity to extend their care towards their families by making a smoothie as a gift to those special people that includes all their favorite fruits.

Steps
Read the story What Does It Mean to Be Kind? and discuss how the characters in the story show their care towards one another.
Present the idea of doing something for the family that shows that we care for them.
Students will interview their family members first, which will allow for an opportunity to connect and learn more about each person, and for students to engage in research - finding out each person’s favorite fruit. Students can use the Family Fruit Survey to document this information-finding through mark-making and drawing (adult help may be required).
Gather all the fruits from the survey and other ingredients, and create a smoothie to serve to family!
