Activity Overview
Role-playing takes on a personal slant in this puppet-making activity. Children and parents can use their artistic skills collaboratively to make puppets that represent members of their community. Giving young children the opportunity to role-play with representations allows them to engage in different personas and build their awareness of others motivations and feelings. Role-playing is an important strategy that young children use to filter and process complex experiences, and sort through what they’ve been through in order to understand it better.
What You Need
Puppet Making Supplies: felt, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, yarn, pom poms (if these materials are not available you can also use toilet paper rolls or rolled up paper tubes and drawing materials)
Glue or tape
Steps
Sing the Finger Family song to inspire your art-making session.
Decide as a team which family and community members your student wants to represent as a puppet.
Making a list with peoples’ names is a great way to involve early literacy, numeracy and planning, so you can tally how many puppets need to be made, and also check mark each puppet after it is made.
Use the suggested materials to create puppets and use them in your next dramatic play scenario.
