Activity Overview
Gross motor skills such as agility, motor planning, and visual-spatial awareness are all engaged in this Mission Impossible-inspired obstacle course. Create this activity as a surprise for your child as a way to increase buy-in and excitement around the challenge.
What You Need
Masking tape (party streamers if you want to add more color)
Hallway or corridor (can be done in a room, but it takes a bit longer to get set up)
Your creativity
Steps
Attach up to 20 lengths of tape or streamer across the width of a hallway.
The ultimate goal is to tape these strands so that a child's body can move through them, but challenging them to strategize their maneuvers by climbing, crawling, hopping, and holding their body in different positions.
Encourage your student to maneuver through the maze without disturbing the tape.
Challenge your student with increasing levels of difficulty, but only to the point that the task remains fun.
Guiding Questions
How can you move your body?
Can you hold your body in one position?
Do you have to jump, wiggle, or crawl to get through?
Extensions
Turn the tables and have your student design the next iteration of the maze for grown-ups to go through. This will likely be more difficult for an adult-sized body, which students will relish.
