Activity Overview
Part of early childhood development is learning to master our proprioceptive sensory system - the understanding of where our bodies are in space, and where we end and the world around us begins. A great way to exercise this sensory system is to jump, fall, crawl, burrow and roll. Making a pillow pit with some guided movement is a fun, safe and multi-sensory way to help our bodies become more balanced and agile.
What You Need
A safe, clear space
As many pillows and blankets as you can find! The more you have, the safer this is and the more fun it can be. We recommend at least six pillows to do this activity safely. Yoga bolsters, yoga mats, outdoor and indoor seat cushions, are all great additions. Anything comfortable and padded will add to the fantastic fun.
A jumping-off point (side of couch, bed, chair, low table)
Steps
Find a safe open space, and line the floor with blankets (blankets folded in half gives that extra matting and makes a good base).
Create your landing zone. Make sure there are no sharp corners or hard surfaces within a few feet of the landing zone. Right off the side of the couch is a good place to do it. Add the pillows and other packed materials to the landing zone until an adult feels it is safe to use.
Have the student walk and crawl on the Pillow Pit first so they can get a sense of how it feels. Allow them to explore for a little while safely on their own. Use guided questions to help support their engagement.
Use your imagination to tell a story about this pillow pit - are you jumping into an ocean? A vat of jelly beans? A giant fluffy cloud?
