Activity Overview
Color is all around us, and it informs much of how we interact with the world. From identifying informational signs to creative expression, colors are an important part of a child's foundational understanding of the world. This activity allows for observation of different colors of objects in daily life and also activates growing early writing skills by utilizing drawing and mark-making to document the student’s observations.
What You Need
Clipboard
Paper
Basket or tote bag
Rainbow markers, pencils, or crayons
Steps
Take a walk in nature or your neighborhood to see how many colors you can find. Bring your clipboard, paper, and writing tools to track the colors you see and what the object was.
When you see an object, you can draw it or make a mark on your paper with the same colored writing utensil. Pause in these drawing moments to allow the students the time they need to sit with their work.
As you walk, collect natural materials such as sticks, stones, shells, grasses, flowers and anything else you can find in your area. Keep these materials handy for your Nature Collage.
