Activity Overview
Digging in the dirt has long been understood as a fundamental way for young children to explore their world. It gives them a place to be messy and creative with the most natural material. When we add water, it allows the child to see the changing state of the material, and explore how it behaves and feels differently than when dry. Get ready to get dirty!
What You Need
Organic potting soil
Loose parts
Mixing utensils
Bowls
Cups
Water (second half of week)
Steps
Allow children to explore the material freely.
Depending on the children's interest, you can add loose parts, change out materials or add water.
Try to let the children explore each set up for at least one day before adding or changing anything.
Use the guiding questions below to help inform your conversation. When working through questions with your student, make sure to allow time for them to respond. Young students often take a few moments to collect their words before they are able to share. This time is often uncomfortable with adults so just be aware of this as you work with your students.
