Activity Overview
The Name Builders is a follow up activity to STEAMed Up, in which students addressed problems from the mind of an engineer. Iterating and designing through real-world, problem-based learning is foundational to building agency and self-efficacy in our students. The processes of exploration, creation, and improvement are natural ways for children to learn about the world and increase their understanding of how things work. This time, students will read the book Ada Twist, Scientist and invoke the problem solving skills they have been practicing to apply them to a literacy concept: How can I build my name?
What You Need
Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty
A collection of Maker materials to work with
Cardboard
Steps
Read Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty and think about the steps taken to explore a solution. Use the guiding questions to discuss the concepts related to problem solving.
Collect some maker materials. On a large piece of cardboard, (or several pieces of cardboard) write each letter of your student’s name in block lettering. Make sure that it is large enough that they can fit some maker materials in each letter.
Students will form each letter of their name using only maker materials. In some cases, a single material might fill an entire letter but in most, students should try to use a variety of materials. See if your student can fit the materials as tightly as possible within the boundaries of each letter.
Guiding Questions
What was the problem in the story?
What steps were taken to try to solve the problem?
Did it work right away? What did the characters do next?
What materials have you chosen? Why?
How do the pieces work together to make your letters?
What challenges arise while making your project?
What other items could you select and how could they work in your project?
Is there anything you would do differently to change or improve your project?
Extensions
If you would like a challenge, see if you can create a standing or 3D version of your name.
