Activity Overview
Sequencing is an important skill that helps with organization and comprehension, particularly as related to text-based information.Sequencing is also a key element to unlocking and understanding patterns and making meaning from those connections. Students will follow along with the steps that the neighborhood goes through to establish their community garden, and will be able to create their own sequences!
What You Need
One Little Lot Sequencing Mats & Cards (Optional to laminate the sequencing mats for future use)
Scissors
Optional: materials for your own planting activity
Steps
Read One Little Lot on Epic. As you read, count along and discuss the different steps that the neighbors take to build their community garden.
Use the sequencing cards and mats to retell the steps from the story.
Think about what steps you would take to make a garden of your own. How would you design it? What materials would you need? What would you use it for? What would you grow?

What is a community garden? What are they using the community garden space for?
What did they have to do in order to grow in their garden?
If you were planting a garden, what steps would you take to grow your garden?
