Activity Overview
In this activity, students will have the opportunity to step into the role of scientist. Through interviews with important members of their community, students will record and organize important data about all of the best foods that have been featured in this unit! Students will work on public speaking as they inquire from friends and family what each of their favorite foods are. The data that is collected will be organized with tally marks, and with words. All of the information will be analyzed for patterns, and you might even discover your next favorite meal!
What You Need
Pencil, pen, or marker
Contact information of special people in your community
Steps
Think about some significant people in your immediate community - perhaps aunts and uncles, grandparents and neighbors, siblings and caregivers. Spend some time contacting them and ask the poll question in the document. Use tally marks to track responses.
While you are speaking with them, ask them what their favorite food is and record the data. Extend the conversation by asking the questions for members of your community below.
Go back and look at the responses. Talk about any patterns you may find and what they might mean.
Guiding Questions
Questions for members of your community:
What makes the food your favorite?
What does your favorite food taste like?
Do you have a favorite recipe? Did the recipe come from someone special?
Is there a favorite restaurant that you order from/eat at?
How do you feel when you eat your favorite food?
Which category got the most votes. Why might that be?
What observations can you make about the data you have collected?
Extensions
Collect data from a new group of members in your community across multiple days. After you’ve finished gathering data, try to find patterns or new ways to sort.
