Mental Health Care

Today’s teens and young adults are the most anxious ever, according to mental-health surveys.  Anxiety affects more than 40 percent of U.S. students and is the leading mental health issue among youth.

Mindfulness is more than a program or idea, it's a total philosophical shift from reactive to proactive. Offering students skills to use any time, in any situation, can be transformative. Mindfulness changes the brain, emphasizes focus on the present and leads to happier people.

Below are links to videos that promote mindfulness.

"The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation, but your thoughts about it."

- Eckhart Tolle

What is Mindfulness?

So much of our lives is what happened in the past, and what's going to happen in the future. Mindfulness is about paying attention to the now.

Just Breathe

This film was created by two parents whose son was learning about social-emotional learning in elementary school. It was made one Saturday afternoon with their son, his classmates, and their family members who talk about what they had learned, entirely unscripted.

Beditation

Positivity = Happiness

What do you need more of today? Joy, forgiveness, centering, love?

Write that word down and meditatively doodle around it. There is no judgement in your doodling, this is about the process not the product,

Gratitude = Happiness

Every night for one week write down three things that brought you a quick smile or felt good.

People who are grateful tend to be happier, healthier and more fulfilled. Being grateful can help people cope with stress and can even have a beneficial effect on heart rate. This action is easy to do yet its benefits have been scientifically proven.

Sunshine = Happiness

When the sun peeks out today make sure to get out there and soak some up!

It only takes 5 - 15 minutes of sunlight a few times a week to boost your mood. Get outside and expose yourself to direct sun on your arms and face to soak up necessary vitamin D.

Getting some sun also increases your serotonin, which is associated with better mental health, protecting against anxiety and depression.

21 Days = Happiness

There’s a belief that you can form a new habit by doing it continuously for 21 days.

The idea is to do (or quit doing) some action for 21 days repeatedly. The 21 Days Challenge app has a few challenges you can try: social media detox, no junk food, happiness, productivity, gratitude, and declutter.

It’s just three weeks, you can do it, right?

Calm = Happiness

Looking for peace and quiet? You've already got it.

In this animation, Headspace's co-founder, Andy Puddicombe, describes the stillness that's present in all our minds so long as we know how to find it. Happiness means getting in touch with that sense of underlying calm. And once we've experienced it, it's always with us, just like the blue sky is there, no matter how stormy the clouds start to look.
