AISD Music Memory Contest 2026
Important Information for Cowan Music Memory Teams
The AISD District-Wide Music Memory contest will be held on:
Saturday, April 25th at the AISD Performing Arts Center. The Austin ISD Performing Arts Center (a.k.a. the “PAC”), which is by the Mueller Development is located at 1500 Barbara Jordan Blvd. Feel free to use the FREE adjacent parking garage.
Contest Time: 10:00am-11:30am Arrive no later than 9:30am
Parents will need to provide transportation to The Performing Arts Center (1500 Barbara Jordan Blvd.—by Mueller Development). Free parking is available in the garage.
There is plenty of audience seating, so parents are asked to stay and watch the contest. Look for AMAZING school signs in the PAC Lobby that will make finding the Cowan meeting place easier. This is where you will drop off and pick up your student.
Students should arrive at the PAC no later than 10:00am and wear a Cowan T-shirt.
Students can prepare to do their best by:
Going to my music website (all students know how to do this) and clicking on Music Memory. This will have resources and information that might be helpful. You can access this by going to my website found on the Cowan website. You will find me under “programs” and “special areas”. This is a paper/pencil test. Each group will have specific roles and all work together to answer questions. Please refer to my HELPFUL STUDYING TIPS for information on how to best prepare.
Students are competing in groups. It is crucial that each member show up on time. This year, each school can only bring a total of 18 students and groups will be in 3 teams of 6. This will be a mix of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.
This year, I am organizing and co-hosting the event. . This means, I will not be in the lobby to greet the students or on the floor to monitor. I will be on stage hopefully not tripping or looking super awkward. My anxiety dreams have already started. I do have two parent volunteers that will be in the lobby to manage the students. Ms. Heather Rudich is one of our Cowan Kinder teachers and has a daughter on the team. The other is a former AISD Fine Arts colleague of mine who is now a current Cowan parent- Mr. Ryan Thomas who also has a daughter on the team. They will ensure students are directed to their seats-and of course I will keep an eye on them from the stage. 💜
I will be meeting with the students to share resources and each one will be given a folder with information.
Please call me at school at (512) 841-2720 or email me at crysta.wohleb@austinisd.org if you have any questions. Thank you so much for your support!

Tips for Success!
There will be matching title to composer and identifying by listening. Students will receive an example and will have used this style to take their final test in class.
Some pieces will not be played on their intended instrument. For example, they might play one of the themes of Beethoven Sym. No. 5 on the piano. You might think this is one of our solo piano pieces-but NO. Don't fall for that.
KNOW THE THEMES. Every single one. Click button below to listen to them all.
Pay special attention to the vocal pieces and sections that do not include vocals. Again- another trick.
We will work in teams with mixed grade levels. We will have a meeting prior to contest during the school day to discuss and make sure everyone feels comfortable.
If I placed you on this team, you are the best of the best. Have fun and just try to do your best.
