Guitar I-IV
Students will develop classical guitar techniques and study classical guitar literature. Attendance at performances and rehearsals outside school hours is required and included in grades. In addition to the regular curriculum, students will be required to complete extra work for weighted credit. Within one music strand, students are encouraged to follow the sequence of courses to complete a Humanities and Fine Arts endorsement. Guitar students participate in Varsity and Non-Varsity Concert & Sight-Reading Evaluations in the Spring semester. Students are encouraged to perform at UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest and audition for All-Region Guitar. Please click here to pay the annual Austin High Guitar fair share fee.
Recommended Prerequisite: Guitar, Middle School 1 (Beginning), Middle School 2 (Intermediate), Middle School 3 (Advanced) and/or director’s approval recommended for placement in all classes. Students develop guitar techniques and study guitar literature.
Meet the Teacher
Mrs. Turner-Creel is entering her fourteenth year in music education and her third year as choir director at Austin High School. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Texas Tech University with a Bachelors of Music and minor in Spanish. In 2010, she performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Dr. Richard Bjella as a member of the Texas Tech University Choir. In 2018, she toured internationally in Estonia, Finland, and Sweden as a member of the Dallas Symphony Chorus under the direction of Joshua Habermann. She earned her Masters in Music Education with a Choral/Vocal emphasis from The University of North Texas in 2022. She sings Soprano in the Conspirare Symphonic Chorus under the direction of Craig Hella Johnson. Mrs. Turner-Creel is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Choral Directors Association, and Texas Guitar Directors Association.
