What James Madison, John Jay and others worked together to create they drew from their studies of the writings and the philosophies of John Locke, Niccolo Machiavelli, Jean Louis De Lolme, Algernon Sydney, Marches di Beccaria, Thomas Paine and others. They understood the seriousness of their task and the value it held for the nation. This was not a temporary measure but for the life of the nation into time way beyond their own lives.

Over the course of five months the 23 articles became seven and with the agreement to amend later delegates from multiple states signed the document, The Constitution of the United States of America.

The Preamble to the United States Constitution:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more

perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility,

provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare,

and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our

Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United

States of America.
